Since February 19, Facebook no longer has saved permanent live videos. This fears journalists, civil rights activists and others who are concerned about documenting contemporary history. The Facebook operator -Meta platforms automatically delete new live videos after 30 days.

Since then, users have gradually been informed that the austerity measure on their account has become effective. With this notification, a time began with 90 days, according to which Meta will remove all older live videos. Users can move this deletion once for six months, according to which these moving images will also disappear, emphasizes Facebook. The only exceptions are still live videos in profiles of deceased Facebook users whose profiles are remembered.

Many live videos on Facebook may be of modest interest in the posterity, but also contain important documents in contemporary history. Radio Free Asia reports on an appointment by the Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA), which asks all media manufacturers in the city to save their live videos. The journalists are particularly interested in documenting the civil protests from 2019 and 2020.

The guaranteed records also include live reports from the state broadcaster RTHK, which you can no longer transfer today. RTHK is now under the control of the central government in Beijing. As soon as the videos have disappeared, the rulers could spread their version of history unhindered, the journalist emphasizes’ Association.

Unfortunately, Facebook users cannot save videos from third-party providers. Only the original streamer or someone who has unlimited control over the respective Facebook account can download the records or transfer it to your cloud storage.

There are various ways to do this. With Facebook you can download all live videos from a profile as a full file. Alternatively, you can search and download individual videos via the profile, your page or the Meta Business Suite. There is also the possibility to set a date area in the activity protocol to display all available videos.
