Texas Tech’s campus in Lubbock will be closed on Thursday, Friday and next week for the spring holidays after a Mannloch explosion triggered a number of fires around the campus on Wednesday evening and triggered power outages and evacuations, confirmed officials on Wednesday evening.

Lawrence Schovanec, President of Texas Tech, shared an e -mail with the campus community late Wednesday after the explosion and fire in the tech tunnel system.

“Dear Texas Tech family,

On Wednesday (March 12) an explosion occurred in a tunnel and caused a fire. The fire spread and led to failures on the Texas Tech Campus. Electricity and gas were closed on the campus of the Texas Tech and Health Sciences Center in Lubbock so as not to spread the fire. The fire was successfully deleted on Wednesday evening.

The Campus infrastructure is thoroughly checked for security because the power supply comes online again after shutdown. The cause of the fire is still being examined.

In order to enable the thorough review of the campus infrastructure and to ensure the security of our campus community, we will close the campus on Thursday, March 13th and Friday, March 14th. All classes are canceled and all non -essential employees should work from a distance if they are able. This includes employees of Texas Tech University System Administration. The human resources will pursue an email to work agreements.

The police from Texas Tech and Lubbock fire brigade rescue officers offered updates after 10 p.m. during a press conference and warned the public to keep away from the campus while the situation remained actively.

Caitlynn Jeffries, a public information officer for the Texas Tech Police Department, said the incident had started at around 7 p.m. with an explosion in a man hole near the engineering key in the central part of the campus near the 900 block of the Boston Avenue.

“This explosion led to a power failure at Texas Tech University, including the Health Sciences Center,” said Jeffries. “We evacuated the engineering key and ask that all public and unofficial employees avoid campus at this time.”

Lubbock Fire Rescue Capt. John Tunnell said that firefighters reacted to the reported explosion and quickly discovered other shaft pools with active fires and smoke that were spent by them.

“This remains a very active scene, as the crews continue to work with Tech officials from Texas to alleviate this emergency,” said Tunnell.

Power was closed on the entire campus late Wednesday. However, no injuries were reported.

It was not immediately clear what the explosion and fire triggered. The manholes seemed to be connected to the extensive tunnel system, which runs under the Tech campus and carries supply companies.

The students were told that they could go home early for the spring holidays. The campus closes on Thursday and Friday before the regularly planned break next week.
