The funeral of Pope Francis will be a solemn event that spoils himself in Roman Catholic Pageantry to say goodbye to a Pope for over a decade. But with dozens of foreign delegations that are present – some from countries that are open to each other – the supporting seats of the funeral have also presented a possible nightmare for the Vatican planners.

On the list of confirmed guests: a Russian minister and the Ukrainian president. A minister from Iran and an ambassador from Israel. President Trump and former President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and the leaders of the countries, Mr. Trump, met with tariffs and accused that he had abused the United States.

The Vatican Protocol offers a solution to the potential geopolitical awkwardness: the alphabet.

At the open-air burial fair of Francis on the St. Peter’s Square, members of foreign delegations are divided into groups such as monarchs and government managers and will sit in French in their group in alphabetical order based on the name of their country in French. The reigning monarchs come first, followed by heads of state, head of government, royals and across the board to include ministers and other dignitaries.

Only the state’s heads and the local Argentina of the Pope receive privileged seats. The delegation with the country’s president, Javier Milei, will sit closest to the square, said the Vatican, followed by Italy.

Some other recently top-class ceremonies led to interesting seating combinations, as was the reopening of the emergency lady cathedral in Paris, when Mr. Trump sat next to President Emmanuel Macron from France or President Jimmy Carter’s funeral when Mr. Trump was next to the former president Barack Obama.

For the Vatican, all countries are the same in front of the alphabet. But that does not mean that there is no chance of unpleasant moments.
