Trump says he will install himself as chairman of the Kennedy Center

President Trump announced his intention on Friday to bring John F. Kennedy Center to the performing arts in Washington more firmly under his control.

“In my leadership we will make the Kennedy Center great again in Washington DC,” wrote Mr. Trump in his social media platform about the social social media.

Mr. Trump said that he would “end several people from the board of trustees, including the chairman who did not share our vision for a golden age in art and culture”.

He added: “We will soon announce a new board with an amazing chairman, Donald J. Trump.”

Mr. Trump’s plan to clean the board and appoint himself was first reported by the Atlantic on Friday. Shortly afterwards he published his announcement.

The news amazed the world of arts and culture, but were not a surprise for people who speak to Mr. Trump. In the weeks after his election victory, Mr. Trump told the people that he wanted to be the chairman of the famous Kennedy Center.

The current chairman is David M. Rubenstein, the financier and philanthropic, who has held the position for more than a decade. Mr. Rubenstein’s retirement in January 2025 was announced, but after Mr. Trump’s election, the Kennedy Center said that he would remain in the role by September 2026.

The leaders of the Kennedy Center recently expressed optimism towards Mr. Trump and said that Melania Trump, the first lady, who serves as honorary chairman, had personally expressed interest in combining the center again.
